Well, spot what I have been up to this afternoon, not a horrible hunts in sight, also have re-glued the diaphragm on the speaker, so just to re-assemble and test, I did quickly try a replacment ECC85 by substitution with a known good one before I dissembled it, but it made no difference, so will have to see if the mass recap has helped.
Don't worry David, I have kept the soldering Iron well away from the dial cord, yes, I have been there, done that, got the tee-shirt, and will never forget it, it was on a grundig with twin FM bands :@
