I've spent a bit more time on my Fenman 1 today, and have replaced the horrid 2 core mains lead as fitted by Pye - as was so often the case - tied in a knot as a crude form of cable restraint. Even by the stadards that prevailed back in 1955, it seems a very shoddy way to anchor the mains cable on what was quite and expensive radio in its day. The cable had passed through a hole with sharp burrs punched into the rear apron of the chassis. I enlarged the hole, fitted a grommet and fitted a new three core flex, anchored with a 'P-clip'.
I've taken a few more scalps in the duff cap/resistor dept, again making good use of the 'Col coiler' which makes the job of fitting replacement caps and resistors so much easier by coiling their ends and slipping over the short remnants of the wires from the old cap/res then soldering the joint. Much less disturbance of valveholder and IFT tags etc.
I probably won't get any more workshop time until after I return from the Golborne swapmeet, but it's nice to have been able to get stuck into what has turned out to be quite an extensive project as compared to more simpler sets. All being well, there are just a few more resistors and one or two caps to cull, then when the valves have been tested, it will be ready for its 'M.O.T' test. - 'Moment Of Truth'! After that, it will be the turn of the cabinet to get attention.
Hope that's of interest.
