After trying many different chemicals to clean off the varnish from the brass - with no luck - I finally settled on the Dremel with a rubber abrasive pad and this seems to be the most practical way forward. I've done the trim for one of the side speaker surrounds and here is a comparison shot where you can see the before and after. It's a bit painstaking but the result looks reasonable. Once I remove the remaining finger marks, etc. and give it a shot of clear coat it should be fine.
