In terms of structural integrity I think this one was caught just in time. The chassis is so heavy that it would have fallen to bits if it were seriously impaired.
The filler I use is Wilkinson's version of Pollyfilla which is softer than wood so easy to sand flush. I put PVA in it to make sure it sticks and in this case put some wood dye in to hopefully help it blend in a bit.
Even if it doesn't work out it's all experience and re-veneering is an option, albeit an expensive one. I would also wait a good wile before doing that to make sure that the w/worm really have gone.
