I couldn't fully resist and took the chassis out.
The resistor in question is an RS 10W 25Ω wire-wound and has clearly blown at one end.
It looks like the audio section has been re-capped already as as it performs so well (until a lamp blows!) I'm inclined to leave well alone, though will obviously have a poke around with a meter first.
