These sets use battery valves with 1.4V heaters in series, which explains the 7.5V LT battery. Hence, one valve with an open circuit heater, or poor pin contact in the valve-holder will stop the set working. I haven't go the circuit to hand just now, but I assume that the mains input has a voltage selector. Given the fragility of the filaments in these valves, it's important to ensure that the heaters aren't over-run with too high a voltage when working on the mains. If the filaments are intact, it's unlikely that the valves will otherwise be faulty (ie, low emission). I'd be inclined to check out the 'switchery', HT voltages and aerial circuitry. If the audio stage is working, scratching the wiper of the volume control should cause loud crackles from the speaker.
Best of luck with the set Kevin, when you get a 'round tuit'!
