I hope you salvaged the LEDs before ditching the tree!
I think that as in most things in life a lot of the art is knowing when something is near enough and which bits of theory aren't worth much in the real world.
In pre-internet days it was far more difficult to get information and I'd often be doing things largely by guess work so I've ended-up knowing a lot about the Hows of electronics but very little of the Whys. It has its advantages as I'm not hide-bound by convention and after all "Experts are only good at one thing: explaining why something will not work!"
