I admit that I didn't measure the Hunts. It was there, I had the chassis out, I had a replacement so I did it.
Your comment about no hum matches my previous experience, which is why I was pondering on changing the electrolytics. You're right about that can, it's very small for a triple. My modern 32 + 32 is actually slightly bigger. The 8uF provides extra smoothing for the Triode Anode and the first two Screens. Apart from the Triode Anode I wouldn't think it makes much difference.
My best guess re the design is that they used what was readily available - the 'Parts Bin' approach.
There is already some distortion of the case so it will be interesting to see what happens next. It doesn't get much sun at the moment, but come the Autumn it will more exposed.
