c1985 I was working at EMI research labs on the subjective effects of line and frame doubling. The biggest problem was the best results involved de-interlacing but the technology for doing that without causing too many other artefacts was beyond what could be done economically. Your saw this on a lot of earlier flat screen sets. An LCD display has to have progressive scanning. On many sets there were horrible artefacts such as horizontal pans or movement causing objects to have comb shaped edges.
