I used lamp limiters 64 years ago! Did thousands of PX TV repairs and appliances without a variac.
Ah! those ozone scented days!
Had a wall board with lots of different mains sockets because there were still so many different ones in use. Two series lamps, all wattages to match the appliance up to a pair of 150w monsters.
Because the soldering iron was on all day I used the limiter to control it's idle temperature.
Before the regular use of MCBs and no RCDs of course.
Wylex rewireable fuses. The mains disconnect was a double pole iron clad with pot carriers where the fuse wire ran over the front of the carrier, no live pulling of fuses!
House fuses were the same but in a glass fronted wooden case.
