There's an alternative explanation of the wonky U on the Museum of Design in Plastic web site here:, which says:
"The Bush company name logo of four letters on the front feature the infamous horsehoe-shaped, wonky-u. This has been attributed to the Chinese factory tasked with manufacturing this model deciding not to attach each letter individually with fixing pins but instead to mould them into the front panel. In so doing the letter became mis-shapen."
Both explanations sound plausible but on balance I prefer Jeffery's!
