That, before I saw the size, reminded me of the 38999 military connector, and that was not too bad to terminate. I can see re-termination of the G101 out in the field taking about an hour or two each end. Still it was probably easier and more reliable (as you had a tested cable) to turn it round (testing would have been fun). I bet some smart ass had a male-male and female-female set stuck in their bag just in case and to earn a few pints as reward. I think I would.
Mind you I am one of those weird people who like putting connectors on.
