Amazing what can be achieved with what is basically a 2-inch refractor.
Patrick Moore used to consider a 3-inch refractor as the starter telescope for the budding amateur. And guess what I was given by my parents in 1963, as a reward for passing Common Entrance school exams. I still have it today.
Mr Moore was very kind. He always answered my postcards on astronomical matters and even 'seconded' me into the British Astronomical Association (BAA). In 1965, he invited me and my mum over to his house in East Grinstead. We imbibed copious quantities of lemonade and observed the Great White Spot on Saturn through his 15-inch Reflector.
