When it works, Virgin internet is meant to be generally good. Their admin is the spawn of the devil. Leaving them can be difficult and their pricing structure is opaque, often expensive. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.
Unless you're with one of the independent fibre companies you're on the Openreach physical network. Often called open wretch. To be fair, I haven't had many problems in the 20+ years I've been with Plusnet. From 512kb/s ADSL (a revelation after dial up and IDSN) all the way up to about 15Mb/s ADSL until FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) was available. Now a solid 80MB/s down, 20MB/s up. Openreach are laying fibre in my area so I may go to full fibre (FTTP or FTTH) soon.
All ISPs should get about the same results on the Openreach network. BT's admin is almost as bad as VIrgin - the experience we've had at the Broadcast Engineering Museum has been horrible. We were with Plusnet until they stopped selling to businesses. We're switching to Zen soon.
If you want to retain a landline number after switching ISP, you'll need to go to BT or a few others that offer digital voice. Otherwise you'll need to port it to a VOIP service. At home Ruth and I rely entirely on our mobiles.
PS: Despite being owned by BT, Plusnet are still a good ISP for home users. If you are thinking of switching to them may I bag the referral bonus please
I think that Zen still offer top notch service but at a higher price.
