When I moved to broadband only I decided to get rid of the landline number completely. Almost all the incoming calls were spam so what was the point in paying for it. My wife and I both have mobiles (on different networks), both have unlimited calls and both work with calling over wifi.
Ultimately old fashioned POTS would work after a long power failure but in a couple of years it will no longer exist at all. I'm thinking about float charging a 12V SLA to power my modem/router. When we get FTTP it could also power the ONT (all these sets of initials!) and keep things working for many hours of power cut. Phones can be recharged in the car in emergency.
I just looked at my modem/router log. Up time is 452 days with rock solid 80/20 speeds. Sod will now intervene.
