There's a fixed stop, and also an adjustable stop, for these (a washer with a little tab that slots through one of many holes in the moulding, just behind the panel nut).
Do you have that washer?
If yes, then as far as the internal contact goes, it's just trial and error - though if you get it wrong once, you should be able to work things out such that the second attempt is right.
The hardest thing with these is putting the spring and ball-bearing detent together. There is a curved channel, accessible in one position, that facilitates this - else you could have a ball launched across the room!
