As it is open circuit, I decided to see if the break was near the outside so removed the fine string and tape to get to the wire.
I scraped through the tape to the copper and still got no sign of any continuity resistive or otherwise so concluded the break must be well inside the coil - possibly green spot corrosion at the very beginning. You are dead right, the wire is staggeringly fine. Measured at 2 thou on my micrometer.
If I'm going to attempt to rewind it, I think I will use something slightly thicker as 47 swg has very little strength and would snap at the slightest tension.
You said the pickup had quite a high output so a slight lower output could tolerated as at the moment, there is no output and amplification is easier to achieve these days.
