In terms of look and feel, I like things to look as close as possible to Windows 2000. Very much penny plain. Single colour background, no window animations etc.
When I was using W7 and XP I always used the control panel to make this happen. Linux Mint Cinnamon is reasonably OK in this respect and I'm now used to it. There are still a few things that I would prefer to look a little different. If I ferreted around I could probably do this. Linux is completely open, anyone can change anything if they have the ability. There's plenty that can be tweaked in the system settings and I've done a few changes, notably setting my favoured plain background colour.. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody hadn't written an add-on that makes Mint Cinnamon look like W2000.
The Nemo file manager in Mint CInnamon has one particular minor annoyance. In W7 (and XP) you could click on a file name and rename it in place. In Nemo you have to right click and select "rename" from the menu. I could probably find an alternative file manager that I liked better, or possibly some kind of add-on (again, Linux is completely open) but I haven't bothered. In other respects the Nemo file manager is probably slightly better than the one in W7.
