For a different way of getting into to the ham bands...
Tecsun PL-330. All HF bands and SSB, remarkably good and uses the same chip as the more expensive ones. £50 to £80 depending on direct from China or local. For the foundation license the ubiquitous Baofeng UV-5R (there are other models, all much the same) for less the £20 in the UK, these work well for local work and repeaters. Both have lithium rechargeable batteries (charger is in the radio) and at their price will save a significant amount of beer tokens.
I still have my PL-330 and use it in the garden every now and again, I did get a Baofeng UV-5R just to find out how £20 did, I was surprised how well. Gave that to a foundation license pupil.
