I've also used a lamp limiter in an HT feed while diagnosing line timebase problems. For transistorised timebases - valves can take the short term overload.
And 3 settings if you rewire it!
And not only that - put the two bars in series across the supply, take the output from the midpoint - hey presto, the Poor Man's 240:120 Autotransformer!
