I find such errors very offputting but I suppose journalists work to very tight deadlines so maybe much of the research gets scrimped on?
Often I have found that non technical people are afraid to get their feet wet and do tend to avoid such things. That will only get worse as things get ever more sophisticated and the enthusiast is locked out by lack of information and stricter regualtion, whether for good or bad.
