There are a choice of OS, which as well as the official Raspberian OS (A Linux which unfortunately uses Wayland for desktop) there are other well supported Linux OS.
Years ago my first Pi also had the 1980s RiscOS used on Acorn Archimedes, which was what the ARM was actually designed for. There was also a somewhat pointless MS backed Windows for ARM, but the whole point of windows is really x86 legacy sw needed by small businesses and corporations it wasn't popular.
Ubuntu Mate ARM64 version seems to run the most Linux softwares and device drivers and also uses X rather than Wayland for Window stuff.
The Apple Newton was why Apple did some early investment to Acorn for the ARM. The early smartphones from 1998 to about 2001 used a custom 486, but Nokia switched to ARM for the Communicator N9210
The very first Pi was practically an ARM SoC phone IC on a breakout board.
