I've seen a very early Bush studio monitor at BBC Research labs in 1974. It was an antique then. No idea if it was 405 or 625. I think the CRT was missing. Probably 21" round one. Huge floor-standing metal cabinet.
I doubt the Pi can do colour coding in software. The sums are simple enough but doing them in real time might be awkward as they won't be part of the standard repertoire of a GPU. If there's dedicated PAL/NTSC coding hardware then one can hope they've made it sufficiently flexible to do NTSC 405.
