I can't add much to what Mark has said - he's one of the UK's Hacker gurus - but even if you don't have some old PP9s to provide the cases any old assembly of 12x AA cells will work. May not be as elegant but it will do fine. If you make your own mains PSU, any reasonable transformer and rectifier will do the job, giving at least 20V unregulated. A quick and dirty trick to make 18V regulated is a few diodes or a couple of LEDs in the 0V leg of a 7815 (which many of us will have in the junk box) will work. It won't be very well regulated and the short circuit protection will be compromised but that doesn't matter here.
Also pleased to hear that BC557B worked well instead of AF11x. This raises the question: Is it worth trying to replace AF11x with germanium devices at all? There are plenty of very ordinary silicon devices such as the BC55x series and 2N3906 that should do a good job for pennies. In theory, some re-biasing might be needed. Is it required in practice?
