I've been reading a little about AD and it's a lot more complicated than I thought. A lot of variables, depending on feedstock which can be anything from straw bales (that's what caught fire at Hemswell Cliff while stacked and awaiting their turn in the AD) to manure to sewage. Almost anything organic except woody materials which don't decompose well. I've seen stories of ADs being a bit picky about what they are fed with, possibly as a result of not using the right designs for the expected feedstock.
Feeding the gas to the gas grid requires purification. Using it locally to generate electricity does not. Though I've heard from somebody who used to service the engines that ran on methane from landfill sites that they had a pretty rough time with the impurities and needed a lot of maintenance.
I don't know what it's like to live right next door to an AD. The Broadcast Engineering Museum is probably 400 yards away from one. I'd much rather see all the manure and other organic waste doing something useful and earning money than leaching out into rivers and killing the fish.
