From what I've heard CED had a lot of quality issues.
At one time there was the thought that disc formats were be used for pre-recorded media & tape formats would be used just for recording, because the tapes were more expensive to duplicate at the time.
Probably because few people could afford to buy 1 device at the time, let alone 2, this didn't work out.
