I took apart one mic and poked a small hole in the body of the internal battery holder so it mounts a bit deeper in the alloy tube/case. Now 2 x LR1 fit giving 3 V instead of 1.5 V (nominal). Seems to work well. I'll compare sound level for onset of distortion with the AA cell. I'll modify the other if any big improvement. I'm a bit sceptical that anything more than 1V matters much?
A toothbrush used to clean PCBs helped to slide in/out and rotate the holder to the old or new hole. The capsule is earthed via wire soldered to on/off switch body, so switch needs mounted on body to complete circuit. Holder doesn't completely enclose AA cell and only the + connection on it, as a spring. The screw on end cap/cable with internal resistor completes battery connection. So signal flows through battery to output from FET in capsule
