I think it’s time to draw a halt – if for no other reason than that the conversation is now generating far more heat than light. I could disagree with some of what has been said on here through close and very personal experience – a significant anniversary is due next month.
As an owner of a classic car (or two) and a home mechanic for getting on for fifty years I am interested in the workings of (old) cars – or more often, the reasons why they don’t work! – and to talk with others who are like-minded and might have similar experiences is useful. I don’t ‘do’ car forums because too often they are a bear garden so a quiet place away from that melee has been very welcome.
Cars can be a tricky subject because they are traditionally and inextricably linked with multiple aspects of status and wealth; and, unfortunately, legislation around vehicles and vehicle usage inevitably has a large P political element as transport is an integral part of a modern economy.
This forum (and VRAT) provide a valuable ‘lounge’ place to have off-topic chats. This is probably only manageable due to a smallish membership. Whilst not a perfect replacement, I find it takes the place of the pub where I used to gather with amateur radio friends. My local scene is much diminished and being an old timer much of what is current is of no interest to me and goes over my head anyway.
Let’s stick to the mechanics and strive to remain on friendly terms.
