I get my fair share of valve sets with open circuit primary output transformers.
I generally rewind the originals, easy enough to do. A few thousand turns of thin wire for the primary, tedious, then a few tens of turns of something a bit thicker for the secondary.
A thought, why is the primary always the first winding? Is it because the core cools it better? I can't think of a good reason why they are made this way otherwise.
I will try a couple the other way and see if it makes any difference. I would think it is easier to put the secondary on first, fasten the thick wires down, then wind the more fragile primary over the top. Less handling of 44swg wire!
Or even winding on a split bobbin, why not?
