USB SSD Power Supply with thru data

Hello

Have a modern Panasonic TV with a USB socket.  Also have a spare 256 Gb SSD Lacie unit with USB cable.

But the TV needs the drive to be self powered !   There is no socket on the drive for powering it.  Tried to find a USB cable that breaks out the power to an external source whilst passing the data though but no luck.

Anyone know of such a unit?

Powered USB hub or USB hub that can use an external PSU.

That would do it Jeffrey. Smallest seem to be 4 Port which is overkill but pretty low cost.

Hi.
Are you sure the USB socket on the TV isn't powered? An SSD is likely to draw less than 500ma so should work OK.
All the sets with USB I've come across are powered with 1 amp available. The Roku box I use is powered from my Samsungs USB socket which is slightly less in current than the Roku box allegedly requires, 30 months down the line and everything is still working.

I've had two Panasonic TVs with USB ports which I've used with a USB hard drive. Both TVs had two USB ports but I discovered that the USB drive was only detected by one of the ports. If there is more than one USB port it would be worth checking the drive in all of them.

Well there is only one socket and a Stick and an SSD wont work in the TV.  Comes up with a msg as not suitable.

Here is a pic from the online manual ... no I couldnt do it again so will have to read the notes again.

Before it times out this is what it says:

"160 GB to 6 TB"

"Connect the USB drive to the mains socket to record and play back with this TV"

"Use the USB HDD formatted with this TV"

Anyway I have ordered the powered multi hub and I shall see if that does the trick.  If not anyone need one cheap

Multi hub and separate power made no difference.

Still comes up: "No device for TV recording" and so it wont let me Format it from the TV which is supposed to be a must.

It knows its there and will play videos I put on the SSD from the PC

Any ideas welcome and tomorrow I will start searching for WEB help

Hi.
I take it you have initially formatted it on a PC for FAT 16?
Try this in the first instance. If no success try a conventional 2.5 inch HDD, could be SSD related.

Well formatted in NTFS as that was the option the PC gave me. Put some videos on it from the PC and they play on the TV. But the TV wont format it !! So no record from that.

Searching the WEB has not come up with any answers either.

Try formatting to FAT32 (not 16) first - there's a chance that having done that, your TV might recognise it and be able to format it.

I know that seems weird, but my digital sound desk behaves in a similar way - it runs its own operating system (not Linux or similar). On the plus side, this means it boots in just a couple of seconds rather than the minute or two (or more!) that many digital sound desks take, but sadly that means that it does have some quirks when it comes to USB devices. Including the need to format them using the sound desk itself, even though it appears to just use a standard format on the face of it.

This sound desk is notoriously fussy about memory sticks and external drives - again, probably as it doesn't run a "standard" OS - and almost every week someone asks on the forums for the latest list of known-compatible devices. Part of the reason for being fussy is because it can do multi-channel recording straight to USB disc, which requires very high sustained data rates. One thing that is especially frustrating: sometimes manufacturers change the innards of their USB drives with no external indication, and that means that certain ostensibly identical USBs might or might not work, and you've got no way of knowing until you try it.

Guess that's a long way of saying your Lacie simply might not be compatible with your telly. Do you have any other drives you could try?
