Russian CRT

Hi.
My good friend from Poland has very kindly sent me a Russian CRT from I belive radar or some other application. Its magnetically deflected and has a high EHT for its size. Its got a flat face of 4 inches diameter.
I see a project looking and a big thanks to my friend.

Its EHT indicates an intended projection application - right? However, you're a master of adapting tubes to other applications. :-)

No dafter than restoring old radios that few will want in the future 

When I worked at Mullards, decades ago as a young man, the boss man who was a big cricket fan rigged a scope to display the Test Matches allowing discrete watching.  To me then that was clever and I didnt understand how it was done, still dont.  Guess the timebase was frame and then a line scan would be needed as a vertical input to make a raster.  Then apply video to the rear Z input and to get a green picture.  Wonder how sync was applied?

So if someone can re-create that it would make an article for the BVWS Bulletin.

Of course it could be a dream its so long ago but I dont think so.

It wasn't very difficult if you had a spectrum analyser with a demod. output. All you needed then was a very simple ramp generator for the frame scan (Y axis) and use the scope's timebase for the line scan. The scope needed a Z input for the spectrum analyser signal.

You can get some kind of a picture on a scope without using the Z input. Dim memory suggests it's done by adding frame rate sawtooth to the video on the Y input. I think the last time I saw it was in the early 1980s at Michael Cox Electronics.

When I was at uni in the 70s the computer centre had a few graphics terminals. Tektronix 4014? They were vector based with storage CRTs. So a bit like doing 'scope art with a storage 'scope. Had to be booked if you wanted to use one. All good fun. This was when we had mainly printing terminals, a few text based VDUs and some were still punching cards,

It's a trick I have seen done in college but do remember the picture quality was poor, perhaps partly due to the persistance of the phosphor coating on the scope. It did use the Z input for the video signal but I don't remember details.

How about these?

You just add some 50Hz distortion to the video input. Even poor smoothing on a TV can give this effect if its bad enough.

Well thats a quick and dirty way but not as I remember it. Pic quality was good.

It was a Test Gear Dept. so unlikely that we would have had a Spectrum Analyser. Seems to me some sort of voltage step generator was needed to produce different levels into a channel input and then the timebase would do the line scan. Would need some sync and then of course the video should be easy.
