I chose that Gridwatch link initially for no other reason than the way it incorporates those vintage Smiths meters but it is worthy of examination for vital information that seems to have escaped the attention of many people.
The dials on those meters are scaled to reflect the capacity of each source of power and, if you look at the large sized meters, one that stands out is for CCGT - Combined Cycle Gas Turbines - which, unlike their older OCGT cousins, produce electricity very economically indeed. As its scale shows, CCGT is also capable of providing 50% of the maximum power available in this country.
We are heading towards a nation of electric car users and now we are being told that the use of gas will be banned. So where is all the electricity coming from?
This is not the place to discuss - it might even be thought of as political, although Political with a capital P it is not as all governments over the last few decades, whatever the colour or mixture of colours in their make up are all equally responsible.
At the age of 75, this is unlikely to affect me much during the rest of my life but it doesn't stop me being concerned at the plight of younger generations in the future.
