Asynchonous to synchronous

Whilst on synchonicity ..........
I have also read that to get synchronous motor one can grind flats on the rotor of an induction motor to turn it into a salient pole motor. Needs a milling machine for that.

I somehow doubt it, unless you could also remove the rotor bars and possibly rewind the stator to provide the necessary field pattern, not sure though. Back to the series motor, would not supplying the brush gear with DC be a more elegant method? ie. a bridge rec AC side in series with the field coils DC across the brush gear?

The Garrard Synchro Lab motor was a shaded pole induction motor with a magnetised rotor (permanent magnet).
Ran up to almost synchronous speed as a normal induction motor and then pulled in to sync by the permanent magnet. Wikipedia Jim

Oddly it was the exhaust duct that we used to restrict to drop the current which to my way of thinking is A about faced.
Room for experimentation me thinks.
