It's an interesting question. Last time I searched, I stumbled across this discussion: http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/222137/why-was-a-capacitor-called-a-condensor-condenser-in-the-early-days-of-electro - where it is suggested that the electricity => water analogy was behind it. Condensing involves latent heat.
I agree about nano. I don't remember the days when it wasn't in common use in electronics, and have never come across a historical explanation for the apparent opposition to it, but am glad that I didn't have to navigate those waters...
