Maths Help?

I'm not sure about "j" in a complicated mathematical sense except that it equals the square root of -1.

Familiar with its use to denote +ve & -ve reactances, +j (or j), -j, and the direction of rotation in a vector +j (or j) = anticlockwise, -j = clockwise and that's about it.

Lawrence, you've just about got the essentials there. For our sort of practical engineering you really don't need much more than that.

In the right sort of company I'll sometimes talk about turning something through "j squared". In other words through 180 degrees

And don't forget that i raised to the power i ( i^i ) is 0.207... A real number. ?

It's worse than that. i^i actually has an infiinite number of possible values. All of them real.

Hi Gents, lets get really technical with a operator (cube root of -1), used by masochistic power engineering lecturers in advanced 3 phase theory. The sometimes have the gall to brin in j as well when there are reactances that differ on each of the phases!!!

I did a bit of 3 phase theory at uni. You could almost guarantee that the answer would be out by a factor of 3 or SQRT(3)
