[Doodlebug]

Hello all,
I'm probably the oldest newbie here (83).

Also into astro imaging distant space objects and collecting old
thermometers.  Also animation, once 16mm now on the PC.

Lisle St an old haunt of mine in the distant past now.
Call myself Doodlebug as I was nearly killed by
one in WW2.

Welcome!

Call myself Doodlebug as I was nearly killed by one in WW2.

Reminds me of the old Paul Merton joke:

My dad always said that the only bombs you had to be worried about were the ones with your name on them...

That really worried our neighbours, Mr & Mrs. Doodlebug

NB. Heard that when PM was doing stand-up about 30 years ago at Jongleurs in Battersea... he was a pretty decent comedian back then !

Yehh, but you're biased, Jeffrey!!

Welcome to the Golborne forum, DB. I'm also one of the oldies - born during the war so perhaps as Jeffrey suggests, one of the better ones - but I don't think so..

I'm also one of the oldies - born during the war......

Which war?

I'm but a child. Will get my London free travel pass in just over 5 months.

I too had a narrow escape from a V1 although, being only about 6 months old, I knew nothing about it at the time!

We lived only a few hundred yards from a track which was the entrance to a disused 19th century chalk quarry.

The V1 landed in that quarry entrance which, although not that deep at that point was sufficient to direct some of the blast upwards. An entire row of about 25 houses backing on to the quarry was flattened (becoming a kids' playground as I grew up, as so many bomb sites did). All the houses in the road that ran at a right angle to these was badly damaged and ours was the 8th one down.

This particular V1 seems to have been particularly potent as, despite its impact point below ground level, damage was reported up to three quarters of a mike away!

Back in the 1970s I used to work with a guy whom worked in an electric motor factory during WWII and they got hit by a V1.
The call went out that one was heading for the building and then he woke up in hospital to be told that the bloke whom always buggered off to the toilets with a newspaper for a while each day was stuck on t loo pot on the top of a drain pipe with no way down. My work mate said it was very painful laughing about it.
