1557 and 1559 would have been of interest to me.

The Philips 638A is my favourite SI and not easy to find  .

Prices to me seemed very low.  A good day for the dealers.

I'd agree with Gary - some of the sets sold for what to me, seemed quite low prices. EG:

1552 - People's set - £50.
1555 - Several items of test gear - £60.00.
1562 - Early valve radio with speaker - £30.00
!563 - Crystal set with 'phones - £70.00
1564 - Bakelite Murphy A98 - £35.00

Of course, without close examination they might be missing their backs and/or valves, have badly damaged Bakelite cabinets, so might not be the bargains that they seem at first sight.

I'd have thought that live internet bidding might have widened the range of punters and resulted in higher prices, but I guess it's a fickle market, like e-bay, where people often bid ludicrous prices for tat, while decent radios sometimes don't attract a bid. I have a chum who is in poor health and is housebound. He bids high prices for items that he neither needs nor wants simply for the short-lived frisson he gets from 'winning', which lifts his low self-esteem and makes him feel 'empowered'  He fails to grasp that he doesn't 'win' anything - he pays the highest price that anyone is prepared to pay for that item on that day, even if he gets a bargain. Then he's back on e-bay to get his next 'fix'. All very sad really.

(I wonder what happened to the 'Sound Sales' gear on ebay that went for sky high prices the other week?).

It was probably safer not to be there.
I'd have certainly been tempted by some of it. However, it's as well to bear in mind that you actually pay 21% more than the Hammer Price.

The trouble with internet bidding is that not all auction houses will arrange shipping, or charge a bomb if they will.

My local sale-room will post small things but for anything as big as a radio I'd have to fetch in person or send my own courier — not just one who'd move it but who'd pack it as well — and if it hadn't gone in two business days I'd get hit with storage fees. As well as their normal 21% Commission they add a further 3% to internet bids to cover the extra costs incurred.

Of course different companies have different rules so it's always important to read the T&Cs before bidding.
