If inclusive roaming, like Three does for many countries, becomes more widespread then getting a local SIM becomes less and less relevant.

I could phone and text UK numbers freely and use data freely. Exactly as if I'd been at home. I took a spare (non-smart) phone with me in case I wanted a local SIM but decided I really didn't need it. I spent a few pence on texts to Israel numbers (4p each) and may have made 1 call to an Israel number at 13p/min. My data allowance is only 1GB/month so if I'd been watching video etc while away from wifi I would have run up a bill pretty quickly. No different to doing so at home.

DBAN looks to be the final solution, maybe immediately before I hand it in as it appears to destroy the operating system as well. Its Domestos for disks!
