Totally off-topic, but I had to do a double-take when I first skimmed the text in the email; my "daily-driver" waveform generator is also a Model 162, but it's made by Wavetek, not Tek. It's considerably newer - full of sand (some 741 op-amps and about a million transistors!).

Twiddled the Calibration Pot on the 162 and that sets up the Sawtooth duration to match the 7704A. That will do for the minute.

Next the 360 Indicator.

   

This is simply a little (3") CRT with Support Circuits, but no Timebase or Trigger facilities.

       

Internally it's the usual Tektronix Build Standard.

       

There's a separate Compartment for the HV Section.

I adopted the same strategy as last time with general Cleaning and Lubricating. Nothing looked remotely stressed so connected up to the PSU  and switched on.
I bit of twiddling produced a nice bright Spot in the middle of the CRT although oddly the X-Shift is backwards by modern convention.
Nothing ventured etc so connected up the 162 Sawtooth Output and got a nice Line

   

The Line was a bit long and the Blanking wasn't connected but it looked promising. Connecting up the Gate output from the 162 killed off the Retrace nicely.

At that stage I had to knock off so left it Soaking.

When I got back the 'Line' was a bit shorter - it's V hot in the Garage - but apart from that everything looked fine. So I've now got a simple little Scope-ish.

I've managed to catch a Cold and feel like the proverbial 'Death warmed up' so there might be a short break before I get back to setting it up properly.

Something I'd never considered before but interesting ...

It really depends what you want the X shift to do - centre the trace on the screen or, if the trace is expanded, move along it to examine various portions of it.

Unlike the Y amplifier, there should be nothing to move the trace from its correctly centred position - no DC shift between measurements, etc.

So, if you want to examine the right hand area of an expanded trace, should you move the entire trace to the left by turning the shift control anti-clockwise or is it more intuitive to move the viewable area to the right (which is, of course, the same thing) by turning the shift control clockwise?

Indeed, which apparently caused all sorts of problems when the Navy was swapping over from Tillers to Wheels.

I've fired it up again this morning and it's all OK. The front edge of the Trace is a bit 'Fuzzy' by Tektronix standards so I'll have to have a look at the edges of the Gate Signal. However, it may simply be that I've used a piece of Wire that's too long  to suit.

When we say "scroll down" we are actually moving the text etc up the screen. Confusing? Possibly, but we're used to it.

Regarding fuzzy trace, are you looking at trigger jitter or astigmatism? Or even simple lack of focus? Some scopes are sharper than others. You could cut yourself on the trace of my 547. The much later 24xx series are nothing like as sharp though still more than good enough for all purposes.

Of course, the 547 is a 50MHz 'scope, and some of those 24-series 'scopes were 200, 300 or 400MHz. What looks like softness is sometimes noise - engaging the BW-limit mode confirms that. Even my humble 100MHz Fluke Combiscope is slightly fuzzy when not in 20MHz BWL mode.

And let's not get into the whole "digital 'scopes are noisier than analogue 'scope" debate

But yes, there are many variables...

Sorry Jeffrey, that wasn't much of a description - I'm not at my best at the moment.
The Trailing edge of the Trace cuts off cleanly whereas the Leading edge doesn't come on cleanly. I'll try to take Pictures.

Steady on Mark, it's a 7704A. Even with the 7A18s it's good for 75MHz. I could get my 475 and Sunday-best Probes out if pressed. That's good for 200MHz.
