Thanks David for the pictures and the links. Already there is a good improvement in the picture, I've since rotated the scan coils, this and the full width and height have made a big difference.
I also removed the 0.1uf visconol EHT cap tonight and I'll do a step by step sequence of the repair of the cap with a modern capacitor. I'm also removing a couple of tacked on capacitors and will restuff them into the old smoother.

The re-stuffing of the EHT smoother is actually quite straight forward. Essentially all you are doing is to cut around the bottom of the bakelite at the alloy base with a hacksaw. I removed the seal and washer from the positive EHT connection as I knew I had to drill a hole as near to the connection to feed the lead from the new cap to the upper-side of the tube to make a connection. Make sure you remove all of the old cap once you have the bottom removed and clean out the old oil and thoroughly clean everything. I drilled a hole in the alloy base for the new caps lead for its earth, this can be held in place once the cap is re bolted to the chassis. I wrapped the cap in corrugated card before inserting it into the tube. I think the pictures will tell the story. Here are some pictures since I've fitted the cap.

One other potential issue that neither of us thought about was the CRT mounting. There is no support for the tube bulb when the chassis is out of the cabinet, it's only supported by the base and scan coils by a frame. I've now added support rubbers to the mask/cabinet added a long clip.

Did you use a tag under the top connection or just a loop of the capacitor wire end with the nut tightened down on it? stephen

Hi. I've had to put the chassis back in the cabinet in the meantime, two "paying" jobs have arrived so these must take priority. I've a little bit more to do but I'm more than happy with the progress so far.

well after almost seventeen years the rebuilt Ekco TV is up and running as it should. The poor old thing had been in the workshop since the cabinet reconstruction in the late nineties. Occasionally I'd do something to it and then some other project would get started and the set was put aside again. There is another Ekco TV set awaiting attention in the workshop, the model TSC1113. This is the pop up screen model, the one with the big scary 15" round Mazda CRT. It also has big scary mains derived EHT. 10KV from a voltage doubler! Two 0.1mfd TCC Visconol capacitors are employed in the doubler circuit. These will require attention first. The TSC1113 will be introduced as a new topic soon. Geordie McBoyne.

I had great fun restoring my TSC1113 a couple of years ago! As you say, mains derived EHT on a separate chassis bolted to the front of the main chassis. Be careful of the tags on the mains transformer which looks like a giant LOPT with the common Ekco straight brass wire tags. These are subject to brass rot and can snap off just below the surface - I had to excavate a couple on my transformer!
The hinged CRT mechanism is very clever and it is fairly easy to disable the counterbalance springs to get at the tube. Hopefully, yours is OK as mine is a bit week! I look forward to the thread, Geordie. Cheers Brian

This certainly looks like an amazing rescue job by messrs McBoyne and McGoodenough. It would be good to see a photo of the truncated starting point and Mr McBoyne's cabinet drawings.
