Ok win 10 installed on this computer .
fast boot not really
speed accessing programs better than win 7
all docs kept but new docs saved in this computer then cant find them in file explorer .
as far as I can tell all programs work well
I am not yet sure about edge but it works fast
anyway so far quite impressed

But as I see it this is an unfair comparison. The W PC presumably is switched off at the mains and so is a true start up whereas the IPad and my Nexus 7 are just in a low power sleep mode. I believe you can set the W PC in 7 to just go to sleep so it should be ready for instant usage the same as a tablet, not that I have ever done this.

I only have one SSD in my W7 PC and it boots in under 1 minute and that's good enough for me.

I must admit that I generally shut my Window 7 desktop machine properly, but that's because a power cut in "sleep" mode would be bad - when in sleep, data is held in RAM, and the computer needs to use a small amount of power to sustain that. On a laptop, no problem; I do that all the time. And most laptops will keep an eye on the battery state during sleep, and if it reaches a critical level, they wake up and put the computer into "hibernate" (where everything is RAM is saved to a temporary file on the HDD before shutting down completely. At start-up, the contents of this file is put back into RAM so that the machine can resume where it was).

My ancient XP machine in the workshop goes into sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. It resumes in about 5 seconds. But booting up from cold takes about 20 - slightly quicker than my W7 machine - so boot-up times aren't really a concern to me. I can easily spend a couple of minutes just wondering why I turned it on in the first place

I don't worry about power cuts while my XP machine is in sleep as it seems to be very good at sorting itself out. I'm sure the W7 machine would be just as good, but as the whole family use it, I prefer to play it safer with that machine. Because I use sleep with the XP machine, it has "uptimes" measured in months rather than hours. Not bad for a 14 year old OS running on 8 year old hardware

Still undecided about 10. I'm certainly not unhappy with XP or 7 - they both do what I need. I also use 98 on occasion. And Ubuntu for server things. I might trial it by doing a clean install of W7 onto a spare HDD, and allow that to upgrade to 10... But not for a few weeks - just too busy.

I have just finished upgrading to win10 and it now say's it will not activate - the machine came with win 8 on it from ebuyer.com so should be ok. Ebuyer are promising their software guru will call me back - lets see what they do. Apparently a lot of people are getting this problem but if you follow the Microsoft web page it offers to sell you win 10 activation code for £189.99........

I installed Windows 10 on a laptop running Windows 8.1 the day of official release, no problem, and took about 2 hours.
Next day I "upgraded" a Windows 7 desktop, no problems.
Yesterday I "upgraded" a touchscreen laptop again all went well except I had to download an updated driver from Acer for the touchpad.

I have a friend who tried to upgrade his Windows 7 laptop but he got the invalid message and it would not activate, although he has a legitimate copy and product key for Windows 7. from an earlier post this seems to be affecting others.

I like Window 10, and the ex Windows 7 desktop runs much faster with 10, I am also on that PC using the Windows 10 "ready boost" function to use USB memory stick as extra RAM.

If you still want "programs" instead of "Apps" Classic Shell have a new version that works well with Windows 10. Download version 4.2.3

I may next year buy Windows 10 for one of my XP desktop PC's.

That's useful feedback John - two hours sounds quite a time for it to upgrade, but then if it runs much quicker, that's not a problem and you seems pleased with it.

I keep getting 'nag screens' from Microsoft imploring and nudging me to upgrade from W7 to W10. (In my own time...)

Did you use Explorer as your browser, and if so, do you now use the new W10 browser, which I think is called 'Edge'?

Presently I use Explorer as a browser  (despite Google's Chrome trying to install by surreptitious means time and again), and Mozilla Thunderbird for e-mails.

I've always been a laggard when it comes to upgrading - I'm in a rut as deep as a grave. When I get PC problems, my eyes glaze over and I make a phone call!

I have been running WIN10 for over a week now with so far no problems
it took 55 mins to install on this dell i3 laptop
The edge browser has a few issues with some sites Ebay being one of them (slows down after 5 minuets browsing)
I would say if you are running WIN 8/8.1 then go for it .if you are running WIN 7 I am not sure there is a great difference .
all my soft ware still works well as does my hardware.

As for the question about browers I normally use Firefox, and occasoinally Chrome.
Windows 10 has a bar to the right of the "Start" button and if you type in there it will search the web and your pc for results.

The total time  taken to install will of course be affected among other things by how fast your download speed is.

If you go to the Microsoft Windows 10 download site you can save a copy to USB stick etc. Although I have just let windows do an upgrade and sat back and waited!.

From my own use Windows 10 runs faster than 7. Not much difference on the 8 or 8.1 machines.It is still, I think, better to have the latest Windows system especially as it is free.

All my old programs have worked OK so far. Also my home network has stayed OK.

Well that's me back to 8.1

I tried and tried to get the thing to activate but no go - support keep telling me wait a few days. After a few days they told me to wait again. After that they say 'we have no support procedures for this now - sorry.'

I still don't understand the indirect file system of W7 and hate it when compared to XP. I certainly won't be in any hurry to adopt W10.
