They don't make them like this anymore.

Looks wonderful quality.

Lovely... And it looks to be quite accessible for service, as far as one can tell from the pictures. It appears to be in great condition...

Might have been made for a specific test purpose, sturdy for sure.

The RN Museum of Radar and Communications lists the manual

http://www.rnmuseumradarandcommunication...202462.htm

This site is a very good site for Navy/Marine stuff, a bit quirky in it's layout if you have not used it before.

EDIT: Whoops, ignore the above ref...

EDIT: Ignore previous edit, I was getting mixed up with the CT452, the CT420 is listed on that page.

Indeed it does - from the pictures. However it has been my experience of Marconi test kit that doing internal maintenance can be extremely challenging. Marconi always did have a certain 'style' of building their kit.

I've got a TF2002 - its big, very heavy and is very impractical for general purpose use. I think it was worth the £25 I paid for it though.

Kelvin Hughes used the same type of control knobs on some of the test equipment they supplied to the Royal Navy, radar test sets etc, maybe it's not Marconi? Dunno but according to something I saw on the web it has two spot frequencies also, 5 Khz & 10 Khz...AF filter check?..FSK ? Going for surplus in WW advert '70's/'80's for around £75.

OK chaps, I confess, it was me wot bought it!
I just couldn't resist.

Yes, I had one of those - until recently. It developed a fault that required extensive dismantling to investigate the cause. (The usual and well-known 're-build of the filters' had been done several years before). But right in the physical centre of the unit is a board which is totally inaccessible for measurements to be taken and component removal. Only by removing the board can those things be done. And that entails the total dismantling of the entire generator - or very nearly so.
The mechanical arrangements for the freq. range switching are ingenious indeed - but an absolute no-no for maintenance purposes.

I persevered & struggled for weeks with this generator - but eventually had to resign myself to the inevitable: B.E.R / unrepairable by design. Salvaged a few bits; balance to skip. A very sad ending: I had owned that item for years; worked very well. But your at £25 was indeed a very good buy: in working order, a TF2002 usually fetches a good deal more than that. But I don't agree that it is "impractical for general purpose use". This generator is a lab.-grade piece of test kit and is intended to be used by highly-skilled technicians and engineers (amongst whom I do not include myself). For the casual hobbyist, it is an over-kill . . . but at £25 . . . .

Ingenious - that's a good word
