Myford ML3 - 21 tooth gear removal

Hi All,
I now remember why I put this lathe to one side. The small gear at the rear of the headstock spindle (I think its a 21t gear) has issues with the teeth (they are quite worn) and I want to replace this. However, its well and truely stuck on the spindle. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can remove this without causing any damage?

Issues? Bloody Issues? I hate Ishoos. Polititions have Ishoos not real people.
So, it has a problem. Is it keyed? Shrunk? Machined out if the solid? Pressed on?

The gear should come off easily enough Rob; check for fastenings like grub screws but unexpected in this location; the key might be a woodruff type? Usually a bit of brute force helps either by levering or tapping with an hammer against a bit of brass bar but be very careful not to leave a lot of gums or mark the shaft. Once the gear moves it should pull free. If you can arrange an extractor this of course would be best but rest assured the gear will come off.

Hi,

I've just had a quick check Rob. The gear you want to remove is secured in position by a ring nut and I believe this ring nut is locked to the mandrel by a very short grub screw through its circumference; if it's like mine was then the screw will be slotted; slacken the slotted screw but take care not to drop it into the black hole under the bench. There should be just the one screw then remove the ring nut; the ring nut should loosen easily with a tap from a hammer onto a punch.

Take careful note and make sketches as to location of any washers; spacers and above all the thrust bearing.
