Out of interest Col, what is the displayed rpm of the motor when the pot is set for max speed? Does that displayed rpm match the rpm on the motors plate?

Hi,

Thanks for asking Lawrence. No the speed is different because I set the frequency to give around 2250 rpm whereas the motor plate states 1690 rpm at 60HZ. Please be aware though that I'm working from memory because the motor is buried in the pedestal and access to the nameplate is denied.

1690 rpm might seem a strange speed but this motor was retrieved from the scrap bin at Brooks. I had access to lots of motors; many were prototypes (W Series) others were sent to our research department for full testing such as load testing and noise; these motors were then discarded and I had colleagues on the lookout for such motors for me. I had full permission to bring any of these motors home on the condition that I never sold them using them entirely for my own purposes which I've done to this day.

I used to raid the scrap bins and when the main stores disposed of boxes of set screws etc the store guys would leave these on a shelf for me to collect if of use to me; I had access to all the departments and the guys were always willing and happy to help me out with turning jobs such as metal spraying and returning a shaft to original spec; bearings; pulleys and drive belts I used to simply ask for and be given; such items were used in bulk and would cost me only a thank you.

In return I lived and breathed Brook Motors every day of the year because I couldn't switch off and I made many things at home out of the parts I had been given for the benefit of Brooks so it was a win win situation.I also used to buy machines at scrap value to play around with; my activities were well known; I never abused my position at Brooks and always did my best for the company up to my retirement.

I used this motor and VFD on the Jubilee lathe and I know the VFD works well with the motor because on manual control using the VFD buttons the VFD behaved as expected for each parameter change; I could adjust the speed up to 10,000 rpm without trouble.

The problem arose when I added the remote controls; the forward/stop/reverse work perfectly but the pot just isn't quite right and I think the fault is down to me in not understanding what I'm looking for in the instruction manual as a couple of examples; Parameter PD130 Number of auxiliary pump; Parameter PD156 Proportional constant (P). This is totally beyond me and to be honest I'm not even interested in gaining a degree in VFD's. I want basic functions only to run my Graduate and as Nick says these VFD's are way beyond basic?

The parameter range goes up to PD250 with many being factory set but this leaves a great deal of parameters to play around with and these parameters each have a number of adjustable settings; if I had the time to spare I could enjoy playing with one of these VFD's just for the fun of it but I want my Graduate running so that I can move onto other jobs.

I wanted to paint the garage ceiling today but another day has slipped by; tomorrow I've some running around to do; being retired is hectic.

Thanks Lawrence; yes I stated I've seen this problem mentioned a few times on forums without a solution being found. Once again I've just sent an email to the eBay seller requesting help to resolve the problem but the last time I emailed I wasn't afforded the courtesy of a reply so I'm not holding my breath?

In between flying around today I popped into the garage to check the parameters and all were as should be so I experimented a bit and what a delight I've now got the top speed I want on the Graduate; this is adjusted in PD005; I had this set at 60 so increased the setting to 90 and this raises the speed from 2250 rpm up to 3042 rpm so at least I've solved one of the problems.

I've just double checked the "jumper" is in the V1 position which it is.

There is a +5VDC feed and I wonder what would happen if I used this instead of the 10VDC feed I'm now using? Reading the manual it states the jumper needs connecting across pins 1 & 2 (VR) in order to use an external potentiometer or power supply? Would decreasing the voltage across the pot track increase the pot sweep? It's possible?

The new 10K wire wound pots arrived today from Rapid and are much heavier duty than the carbon pots I previously bought; tomorrow I'll connect one of these pots to the VFD using a very short cable so at least this will eliminate any interference? I'm using good quality 7 core trailer cable for the remote controls would this make any difference?

I'm never bored due to things going right all the time.

Yes, I noticed the 5v as well as the 10v configuration, not sure what the 5v is for, if you can't get the pot sweep as a full sweep maybe try refugees idea until you get more info as to what parameters need adjusting.
That's the only trouble with some of the Chinese stuff, if they haven't got a proper dealership over here? your in the lap of the gods.

With 5 volts the machine will run at the maximum speed as set in PD005 as the voltage range it 10 volts for stop and something like 7.5 volts for the maximum speed.
The end of the pot track that is zero ohms with the pot set anticlockwise needs to connect to 10 volts.
The clockwise end of the pot should be connected to a resistor and the other end of the resistor connected to zero volts.
It would need a 3k pot and a 6.8k resistor making up the total value to something close to 10k.
The controller will have quite a wide tolerance to the actual value of the pot.
At the moment there is about 6 or 7k of pot track that is not being used.
The 5 volt supply will be there to feed an optional computer interface for operating the machine from a computer screen and will not be needed for a basic set up. You could use the 5 volt supply to feed a power on indicator LED if you want.

Thanks Lawrence. Ideally I would like to follow Nick's advice and stick with the manufacturers settings but unfortunately I'm unable to do so through lack of information as to what needs adjusting in the parameters; I've done the known things but with only limited success so as you say I can try using Refugee's suggestion and hopefully keep pestering the VFD seller and browsing the web.

What a tremendous difference it has made connecting the feed to the +5V; the pot is now giving a third sweep which is a vast improvement and really I could live with but tomorrow I'll connect a second pot in series with the 5V feed and adjust this until I can obtain full sweep on the original 10K pot. I can get this to very fine limits because the VFD has a rev counter; once the resistance is known I can then add a suitable series permanent resistor in the 5V feed or better still revert back to the 10V feed with a suitable resistor? Connecting the 5V feed didn't cause any problems and there were no obvious signs of distress from the VFD? Many thanks Refugee.

At 3,000 rpm this Graduate is simply wonderful.

Not the best of days for me with a lot of running around and problems at Screwfix in Huddersfield. I wanted a number of items from Screwfix because I'm adding better lighting into the garage. Sorry; we've none of those in stock; sorry we've only got so many of those in stock; OK try another make; I wanted MK single surface boxes so LAP was tried sorry none of those either; right I need oval conduit clips and four packs of five; sorry we've only got three packs. What the heck it is bread and butter stuff I wanted and there should be thousands of these items in stock. I was in the store quite a while and eventually my number was called for me to say I ordered oval conduit and this is round; so another long wait until the correct conduit was located; the staff are always excellent and Screwfix is a favourite store of mine but this sort of thing isn't the way to attract repeat customers. Add to this it took over a hour and a half just to visit Screwfix; collect a prescription from the surgery and collect the prescription from the pharmacy I lose the will to live. By the time I finally arrive home I don't feel like doing anything. Well that's my moan over for today.

I wonder if I'll receive a reply from the VFD seller on eBay?

Sorry Refugee; I didn't see your last reply before posting. I think you've answered my problem why two 5K pots in series didn't work? If I read your information correctly I need to add a fixed resistor between 10V and ground which in effect is simply connecting to each end of the pot track?

3000 rpm sounds a frightening amount of revs to a non lathe person. Do you really need that much?

You can check on line if Screwfix has stuff in stock at your local store and order on line for collection there I believe.. I never bother myself, as my store is 5 mins away and I just say tomorrow will do, so please order.

My Chipmaster goes up to 3,000 rpm and it is frightening. Things can go wrong very quickly.
I'd hate to offer a hand tool up to anything running at that speed but then I'm not a woodwork person.
