Preferably I would like to use an analogue meter to achieve this.

With a simple extra oscillator/mixer you could hetrodyne the local osc down to a more managable frequency if going for the prescaler processing/anologue meter display route.

Hi Paul, why not measure the DC output of the multi turn pot with a moving coil meter, maybe buffering it with an op amp to reduce loading ?. The frequency range you quote seems very wide, is it 1 continuous range ? Tell us more about the circuit, it sounds interesting !.

Whatever floats yer boat I suppose, although an Analogue Meter strikes me as masochism. It's hardly 'authentic' if it needs a Processor to drive it.
An old fashioned 270 degree Meter, with a suitable scale, would look good.

The first frequency scale, if you can call it that which I built was a protractor stuck on a homebrew wooden cabinet with drawing pins with a piece of red painted copper wire soldered to the gang shaft...

Not to mention my first....piece of packing crate and drawing pin enabled crystal set with an old 6 ft copper (yep copper) fishing rod as an aerial, some years later I progressed to a soldering iron.

A Soldering Iron my life, luxury. My first one was heated on the Gas Stove - my Dad knew a Plumber - and a mate of mine assembled a 6 Transistor Radio Kit using a 6" nail for the soldering.

To get back to the topic in hand why not a cord drive? Assuming there's enough Spindle on the Pot you could use the usual arrangement 'backwards', that is the Cord round the Spindle drives a Drum which has a pointer attached.
