PC Speakers

Not sure where this should go as its pc related or the seperate spearkers.There is a hum from the box that feeds the 2 speakers.I dont know how these things work.Theres a power feed 1 and acable to the pc ,1 to 1 speaker and another to the other speaker.One speaker has on/off switch.
if i switch the power off the hum goes ,if i bang the side of the box i goes for a while the come back .Its a philips.

hi is the hum there with the volume turned down?
it sounds like hum from the mains transformer, maybe loose.

They are only mains fed
And the noise is there always even when the speaker on/off /volume in off.I dont know what is in the box maybe a transformer?Its about 8" cube and the 2 small speakers are run from it.

from what you say it is mechanical noise from the mains transformer .the fact that if you give it a knock makes it go away surgests it it not mounted as tightly as it should be

I will have to have a look but It dosent sound like vibrations or somthing loose.

If it's as big as 8 inches, then it's probably a woofer. No-doubt the amplifier and power supply is built in there as well. So the humming might be an electrical problem with the woofer amplifier. Perhaps just a capacitor?

Some information would be nice - how about a model number? Or a picture? Otherwise, we're all just guessing, and that's rather unsatisfying.

quick question.. does this hum change with signal wires unplugged? how about with them plugged in.. Sometimes these amplifiers are grounded (why?.. computers are always grounded.. laptops generally float) and earth loops are common.
