After trying many different chemicals to clean off the varnish from the brass - with no luck - I finally settled on the Dremel with a rubber abrasive pad and this seems to be the most practical way forward. I've done the trim for one of the side speaker surrounds and here is a comparison shot where you can see the before and after. It's a bit painstaking but the result looks reasonable. Once I remove the remaining finger marks, etc. and give it a shot of clear coat it should be fine.

Believe it or not, I cleaned my brass-work up on my 3028 with nothing more than fine grade wire wool.

It's great to see restorations being carried out in such a thorough and competent way. So many are skimped - especially when it comes to cabinetry. Lots of useful hints, tips and techniques emerge from your restorations which can apply in broad terms to other radios. I don't think it will be too long, the rate things are going, before we see and hear the set 'on air' on youtube, giving a good account of itself!

Four brush coats of shellac on the cab-hopefully I'll get time for flatting at the weekend and see where it goes from there. I've added slight tints of black, brown and red to the shellac to darken the overall result and hopefully retain a subtle warmth to the final shade.
Brightwork is coming along. One of the side speaker grills was badly damaged so had I spent some time trying to get that flat and re-aligned. I think it looks OK now. I just shot a few coats of gold on both of them so I'll know later on if they look ok or need more work. Cheers, John

Hi,
Thanks for adding the very interesting "you tube" video John; the cabinet looks well and is coming along a treat; Well done. Kind regards, Col.
Happiness is a wreck of a cabinet to restore.
