I know the set I had all those years ago had red metallised Ever Ready (Mullard/Philips) side-contacts except for the output valve which was clear. The output valve was probably a Mullard/Philips DL1 or DL2, at a guess.

Been working on this today.
I have had to change the on/off volume switch, changed some caps that were leaky and some rewiring (the battery plug and frame aerial wiring). Plugged into the battery eliminator..............and it is halfway working.
Sport radio on MW is the only station and nothing on LW, not even R4, so wavechange switch cleaning and some more investigation required.
I have used a donor speaker to test the set. Hopefully the original can be repaired. it just looks like the magnet has moved

Glad to see it's coming on and good luck with the speaker.

I'm following this one with especial interest as I've just taken delivery of a Bush portable and have never previously touched a battery-only set.

there is not much difference really, the main difference is there are no smoothers on a battery only set, as they are not needed. They will be present in battery mains set's though.
I like working on them, like pre war sets, they are very easy to work with and give pleasing results.

As regards the speaker, I just pulled the magnet out and there is some rust around the bottom of the casing which I am guessing is the cause of the problem. It still reads 3 ohms so it should be ok, just need to clean it up and realign the magnet.
I think I shall make a tube from thin card or paper to assist with this.

Happy to report this is now working well on both wavebands, dirty wavechange switch was the problem
Also managed to repair the original speaker. When the magnet was off there was rust on the mating faces and touching the cone. With this cleaned off. I set about realigning the magnet, then put it on the set and tested, away it went!
just waiting for the baffle board glue to set then back together.
