The Baird and Fernseh intermedaite film systems are well known. Shoot a scene on cine film, process it quickly and then telecine. Used to overcome the lack of a good TV camera tube. The technique has been used subsequently in space, before it was possible to do video recording in a compact fashion it was considered worthwhile putting a mini photo lab into space.
This article from Proc IRE October 1952 shows intermediate film being used to overcome the lack of a good large-screen TV display. Apologies for quality of scan, but the volume is quite tightly bound and impossible to scan well without either destroying it or with the aid of a specialist books scanner. I've just done the first part of the article which is enough to give the flavour.
