Having a good week for getting sets for restoration, the pile is getting larger, hope I have time to get through them all.

Latest this week is a Defiant MSH 953 AC, a set I have not seen before.

7 preset permeability tuned buttons and manual tuning. Oddly the valves are 4 volt still, quite late as radios go in 1953 to be so equipped.
Its got all the original knobs and the cabinet is saveable, not found any worm.

Not sure who made these for the Co-op but they look well constructed.

Hi Sam, Plessey I think made the chassis, cabinets at Pelaw in the NE of England.
They are nice sets and quite easy to work on

but it's definitely not from 1953, more like 1938. I'm guessing you've taken the model number as giving the year, but Defiants at this period don't: model numbers are all over the place. For just one example, the top of range motor-tuned monster of a table set, the MSH938, actually does date from 1938 or thereabouts, but also exists in a console version, the MSH957.

Thank you.  Silly me, what ever was I thinking.  They were never making 4v valves in the '50s.

So, you reckon prewar? That would explain the attention to detail, the '30s was when there were 3 men for every job and only the best was made.

Yes, 1938 give or take a year. I used to see quite a few Defiants when we lived in the NE where the Co-Op movement was strong, and still have a couple of consoles from this period. The tuning dials of both somewhat resemble your set, but one is the massive MSH957 - motorised tuning and wavechange and push-pull AC4/PENs so around 12W output - while the other is a fairly ordinary superhet that doesn't have pushbutton station selection. That's a feature that hardly returned at all in even top-of-range models after WWII.
